VoIP for International Calls

When was the last time you placed an international call? Was it for business or pleasure? Do you remember how much it cost, or was it on a business phone? As the world gets smaller and smaller, more people are placing international calls on a daily basis than ever before. Some call family members or friends, while other calls business partners or employees. Regardless of the reason, it’s important to find the least expensive way to make these calls, and VoIP is a great option.

How it Works
Calling an international number using VoIP service is the same as using landline service. Simply pick up the phone, dial the correct prefix, country code, area code, and phone number, and you should be connected to your calling party. Instead of your call getting routed through traditional copper phone lines, it gets sent over the internet.

The calls travels the majority of the way through the internet, and only relies on traditional phone lines to help it reach its final destination. Because the internet is responsible for most of the distance covered, vendors are only charged a small amount for using a PSTN exchange to reach the phone on the other end. This allows them to pass these savings onto their customers.

Different Plans
Once you’ve found the VoIP service provider that includes free or inexpensive calls to your desired location(s), you need to select a service plan. Some plans include free, unlimited calls to specific countries, while others allow you to call designated countries for a predetermined price per minute. A third option is one where you pay as you go. Instead of paying a monthly fee, you only pay for the calls you place. Based on your specific business needs, you can select the right plan.

Mobile Calls
Many companies are now in need of finding VoIP phone providers that include the ability to make international calls on mobile phones. If you have a SIP trunking system, mobile devices should be able to place international calls just the same as you would with an IP desk phone. They should also not be charged any additional rates, allowing you to conduct business with employee or clients from anywhere in the world.
