Running a small business is not an easy thing to do. You probably find yourself wearing several different hats on a daily basis; coming up with marketing, dealing with customers, calculating the finances, and managing employees. As your business progresses, there are a handful of habits you may acquire that could sabotage your profits. The following are bad small business habits you should try to avoid.

1. One Answer Fits All

As a small business, your job isn’t to provide large amounts of products for large amounts of individuals. It would be more beneficial to provide fewer products that are more unique and memorable. This will attract a more focused group of customers suited for your particular style of business.

2. Customer Loyalty

Customers are everything when it comes to a small business. You may feel pressured to spend more energy on finances or products, but don’t forget to focus on your customers. Take the time to get to know them to instill a bit of customer loyalty, and hopefully gain more ideas as to the types of products they desire.

3. Buddy Up

It’s good to be friends with your employees, but not best buddies. As a boss, you need to create an atmosphere that is professional. This will allow you to run your business as needed without worrying about hurting anyone’s feelings.

4. Think Big

In most cases, small businesses just can’t compete with large enterprises when it comes to price. Doing so will only cause frustration. You’d be better off finding something unique you can specialize in that the big businesses can’t provide. Customers that appreciate your niche will find you.

5. Objective Hiring

The easiest way to hire an employee is by seeking out those with the most experience. This may provide some good employees, but those with the most experience aren’t always the best ones for your small business. Instead, look for employees that suit your company’s particular style. 

6. DIY Everything

Just because you own a business doesn’t mean to have to run yourself ragged doing everything to ensure its success. Make sure you take time away from your business to relax and rejuvenate. You can’t run a business if your batteries are all used up. This includes hiring professionals as needed. Finding someone else to do your marketing may allow you to better connect with your consumer base, even if it costs more in the beginning.
