Grasshopper Review Summary

Founded by two hopeful entrepreneurs in 2003, Grasshopper was designed to help small businesses get started and grow as needed. Grasshopper has over 350,000 customers. Clearly, they are doing something right.

Strictly speaking, Grasshopper isn't a VoIP service provider. Instead they are what's called a Virtual Phone system provider. Essentially they help entrepreneurs and small business turn their computers and smartphones into business lines.

Since the launch of their company in 2003, they have continually added new features and have expanded their service to meet the needs of entrepreneurs in an evolving economy.

Some of our favorite features include: get a toll free or local number, keep your existing phone number, forward your calls to mobile phones, custom greetings, professional text messages, music on hold, and more. Check out our review for more details about Grasshopper's Virtual Phone service.

Bottom Line:

Grasshopper fills a specific niche: small businesses and entrepreneurs looking to transform their smartphones and computers into business lines. Great service!

Grasshopper Category Reviews

Overall rating

8.7 /10

Overall Review

Grasshopper provides a great virtual phone service. You have the ability to create and customize extensions to forward calls anywhere, including your office, home, or cell. You can also have designated extensions for specific departments or individual employees.

Toll free and local numbers are available to provide both a local and national presence for your business. We also like the ability customers have to hear their voicemail by opening an MP3 or .wav file sent to their email account. Grasshopper also offers Read Your Voicemail, a feature that provides human transcription of your voicemail.

If a cell phone is your main source of communication, you can use the Grasshopper mobile app to make calls showing your Grasshopper caller ID, instead of your regular cell phone ID. Callers and potential clients won't ever know you're calling from your mobile phone. The virtual nature of Grasshopper also eliminates the need to purchase, install or maintain additional hardware for your service. Grasshopper offers several other calling features.

While Grasshopper isn't a full-up VoIP service (e.g. it uses your existing mobile and home/office phone service), it is a great service that helps small businesses and entrepreneurs look like a large corporation.

Small & Medium Business rating

8.9 /10

Small & Medium Business Review

Entrepreneurs and Small Businesses just getting started can benefit greatly from Grasshopper's Virtual Phone service and features. While Grasshopper doesn't give you all the power and flexibility of VoIP service providers, they do give you all the basic calling features essential to new businesses.

Get a local phone number for your business, assign extensions to your team members (or virtual company departments), read your voicemail, send & receive business texts, get a toll-free number, use music on hold, use conference calling, and tons more.

Again, Grasshopper's plans are tailored for entrepreneurs and small businesses that only need a few numbers and extensions. The pricing is reasonable.

Hosted PBX rating

Hosted PBX Review

For entrepreneurs and small companies, Grasshopper's hosted PBX system is a great option. While, strictly speaking, Grasshopper doesn't provide VoIP phone service, they do offer a virtual PBX calling system managed entirely in the cloud (e.g. Grasshopper servers).

Grasshopper's virtual PBX phone solution offers entrepreneurs toll-free and local numbers, unlimited minutes, multiple extensions, call forwarding, business texting, a custom greeting, music on hold and much more.

Their entry level plan (Solo) provides you 1 business number and 3 extensions. The plan is $29/mo. The Small Business Plan, Grasshopper's largest plan, gets you 5 business phone numbers and unlimited extensions. The plan is $89/mo.

For growing small-to-medium sized businesses (SMB) and enterprise sized organizations, we recommend another solution (e.g. Vonage Business), but if you're just getting started, Grasshopper is a great virtual phone service.

Grasshopper Reliability (9.0 / 10)

Grasshopper is a Virtual Phone system solution, and so isn't strictly speaking VoIP. Grasshopper works atop your existing cell or land line service and so when we're discussing reliability we need to distinguish between your existing phone service's reliability and Grasshopper's cloud-based Virtual service reliability.

Because Grasshopper is a cloud-based service, you get the reliability of redundant networks and routing servers. Customers are generally happy with the service and report better than average up-times and good call quality (4/5 stars from 40 reviews on g2crowd.com). Keep in mind though that if your landline or cell service is spotty, Grasshopper can't help you. This is one of the limitations of a Virtual phone system, as compared to a true VoIP service.

If you have a small business (up to 15 employees), and you don't need tons of sophisticated calling and routing features, Grasshopper's phone service is a good fit.

Grasshopper Features (8.5 / 10)

From a small business standpoint, Grasshopper has all the basic features you would need. This has earned them a solid rating of 8.5/10. We'd like to highlight our three favorite features. The first is Fax on Demand. With many businesses, you fax the same documents over and over again to different clients at different times. With Fax on Demand, you create a library of documents that you can pull from instantly. Callers can request these documents and receive them any time of day.

Our second favorite feature is Business SMS. For just $10 a month per number you get unlimited texts that can be used with all your clients. These text messages will be sent right from the Grasshopper app, so you can stay connected anywhere you go.

The last feature we'd like to highlight is store hours and directions. You select the information you want callers to hear, and they can access this 24/7 by choosing a specific extension. You can also use this to let customers know about upcoming sales, or any important changes to business policy.

Grasshopper Value (8.7 / 10)

Is Grasshopper a good value?

First off, we should point out as mentioned above, that Grasshopper is an excellent service for entrepreneurs and smaller businesses (up to 15 employees). The service provides a great way to help you look professional and polished, when it comes to your business communications. So how does Grasshopper Business Phone Service score in terms of value?

We think the value depends on what type of business you are. If you're a bigger company (larger than 15 employees), we think you can get much more capability and a top-tier robust VoIP calling system by selecting one of our top rated providers. But when it comes to smaller virtual business calling solutions, Grasshopper is a good value. You get all of the features and reliability that a small business needs for a nominal monthly charge. There are cheaper virtual phone services, but cheaper isn't necessarily better.

Grasshopper is growing (they boast over 300,000 happy customers) and it looks like they've poised themselves to be at the forefront of small business/entrepreneur virtual calling needs. We'll be watching their progress.

Grasshopper Customer Support (8.5 / 10)

Grasshopper offers live phone customer support 24/7 in addition to a growing online support center / knowledgebase.

First, the phone support. While it's great that they're available 24/7, Grasshopper support suffers from what most support centers suffer from - variability. In reviews of Grasshopper phone support, we've seen a wide range of customer support ratings. Some customers sing high praises while others aren't very impressed. We see this variability a lot (across all cloud-based service industries), and while it's cause for some concern, it sounds like good Grasshopper support is available if you stick to it. Also, there are plenty of online resources available to you.

Grasshopper's Support Center, Knowledgebase and Community are great resources for topics such as how to get started, number transfers, the iPhone app, Desktop app, and Android app, and much more. You can make feature requests, connect with other users, and track down account issues.

Overall, Grasshopper customer support is better than average and we don't see any red flags.
