Lingo Review Summary

If you're looking into switching your current land line phone service, we recommend you consider Lingo as one of your options. They provide residential phone service over the Internet using Voice over Internet Protocol, otherwise known as VoIP. This type of service gives you clear, reliable calls through your broadband connection. You can call any family member or friend just like you normally would on their traditional phone. You don't even need to have your computer on for Lingo phone service to work.

Lingo has been around since 2004 providing reliable, affordable, quality residential home phone service across the United States. Home Phone plans start as low as $9.95 per month for calls all across the country, or you can choose from a range of plans that allow you to call around the world. Their most popular plan, Lingo World, includes unlimited calls anywhere in the U.S., Canada, and Puerto Rico, plus over 50 other countries.

All plans also include free Lingo to Lingo calling, a free phone adapter shipped to you at no extra charge, plus other popular features we think you might like, such as voicemail, call waiting and call display. Because Lingo uses VoIP technology, you can use your service wherever there is an Internet connection.

Lingo Category Reviews

Overall rating

7.3 /10

Overall Review

As an overall residential VoIP phone service provider, Lingo has earned a rating of 7.4/10. This comes from their ability to provide clear, reliable calls using your existing broadband connection, at prices lower than traditional phone providers. Not requiring customers to purchase additional equipment is also a big plus in our book.

We also like the simple set up that's required to get you started with their service. Once you receive their adapter, you should be able to connect it to your existing internet service and phone, allowing you to make and receive calls in no time. The idea of running phone calls through your internet may seem daunting to many people, so creating a simple way to accomplish this places a higher value on their service.

Although Lingo uses your internet to route phone calls, it shouldn't negatively effect anything else you currently do online. You can still browse the web, send email, and stream music just like you always have. You can also use your phone just like you did with a traditional phone line; just pick it up and dial. The only difference is how the call is routed.

Residential Review

When deciding how to rate Lingo as a residential phone provider, we took into consideration their history as a company. They have been in business since 2004 and have continued to focus on providing a product that's affordable and reliable. Their service appears to be consistent, easy to use, and simple to get started.

Their home phone plans start at just $9.95 a month, and this includes free nationwide calling. If you would like to place calls to locations outside of the U.S., you can do this as well by signing up for one of their international plans. These range between $19.95 a month and $44.95 a month, depending on which plan you select. More and more people these days need to be able to communicate with people all over the world, making international service plans highly valuable.

One of the factors in giving them a good rating was the availability of useful features they provide at no extra cost. These features allow customers to keep track of incoming calls, customize and utilize voice mail, maintain their privacy, and communicate in a variety of ways. Lastly, we want to highlight the ability you have to use this service wherever you go because it only requires you to have a solid broadband connection.

Lingo Reliability (7.0 / 10)

When switching over the VoIP phone service, most customers are concerned about the quality of phone calls. Lingo claims their calls are at least the same quality as a good cell phone, and sometimes even better. This variation in quality is due to the fact that the signals are being transmitted digitally over the Internet. If your internet service is poor, your phone calls will be so as well.

If you do sign up for Lingo residential service, any quality and connectivity issues you have should be directed to your Internet Service Provider. Although Lingo can't control the quality of Internet you use, they do have a system in place that allows you to adjust the connection you to have to maximize its capacity.

It's called the Connection Enhancer and it allows you to adjust exactly how much of your Internet connection is directed towards Lingo phone calls. Most customers don't need to adjust their bandwidth to get good quality phone calls, but if you do have extra, unused bandwidth, you can use this feature to give your phone calls a little more strength.

Lingo Features (7.5 / 10)

A Summary of Lingo Features

When looking at the features offered by Lingo, we feel the need to compare their features to other residential phone providers, and not to companies that provide features for businesses. From a residential standpoint, Lingo has all the features you would need for residential phone service.

The basic features we think a residential customer would appreciate involve being able to see incoming calls, receive and check voice mails, and maintain your privacy. Lingo provides caller ID, call forwarding, call return, and call waiting. All of these help you control the phone calls you receive.

To ensure privacy, they have anonymous call rejection, do not disturb, and caller ID block. This can help rid you of unwanted calls from telemarketers, block your outgoing number from companies or individuals, and help keep your phone line clear for important calls. For these reasons, we have given Lingo a solid rating for overall features.

Lingo Value (7.5 / 10)

Is Lingo a good value?

From a value standpoint, we think Lingo does really well at providing solid, reliable service at low prices. The have five basic plans to choose from; two national, and three international. If you want a national plan, these range from $9.95 to $19.95 a month. International plans range from $19.95 to $44.95 a month.

This is the monthly price you would pay for service, but what about start up costs? According to their site, when you sign for their service, they also offer free activation, a free adapter, and free shipping/handling. From what we can see, the start up cost for this type of service is really low.

All their phone plans include free calls to anywhere in the U.S., Puerto Rico, and Canada. If you select international plans, you can get free calls to anywhere between 50-90 additional countries. For individuals that have family members or friends who live around the world, one of their international plans could be very valuable.

Lingo Customer Support (7.0 / 10)

When we took a look at the customer support options for Lingo, this is what we found. They provide a quick reference guide that includes instructions for setting up all their features. This could be very helpful when you first start with their service and want to get things set up correctly. They also provide steps for setting up the mobile app for their service on your Android or Blackberry device.

To help answer other common questions, they have a General FAQ section that seem to cover the most important questions most customers might have. A link titled Account Management Tips provides information regarding topics such as changing credit card information, activating simultaneous or distinctive ring, or changing voicemail greetings.

If all of these options don't provide you with the answers you need, you can always call Lingo's Customer Support number Monday through Saturday from 9 am to 8 pm. Tech support has a phone number available 24/7. Both of these options also come with emails that you can utilize any time.
