PhonePower Category Reviews

Overall rating

9.3 /10

Overall Review

PhonePower offers solid residential VoIP phone service to US and Canada residents. We've rated their reliability, their features, their customer support, and we've evaluated their overall value. While they're not our top rated provider, they are a good service.

PhonePower's system is similar to other residential VoIPs. They basically send you a device, you install it, and you're up and running. PhonePower's device is reliable and easy to use. There are some customer complaints about the mobile app and online interface, but we don't think they're deal breakers.

PhonePower includes a ton of great features (45+ features) with all of their plans, a definite advantage as compared to some of the bare minimum providers. Check out the features section of our review to see all that PhonePower offers.

Customer support with PhonePower is a mixed bag. While they pride themselves in having US based support, customers have sometimes complained that the support is sub-par (knowledge, effectiveness, speed). Hopefully PhonePower hears the feedback and is working on customer service quality.

As far a value goes, PhonePower is one of the best we've reviewed. The combination of great pricing, over 45 included features, and reliable phone service, results in a great value. One caveat - PhonePower's online interface and app look a little outdated, not as polished as some of the other provider interfaces.

Summary: PhonePower is a good VoIP service with lots a great calling features.

  • Unlimited Calling
  • Mobile Phone App
  • Block List
  • Find Me, Follow Me
  • Web Based Call Logs
  • Advanced Voicemail

  • Price:

Residential Review

PhonePower Residential VoIP Phone Service has been around since 2005. Since their launch, they've continued to grow and develop a great alternative to landline phone service. They've received Inc. 500, Deloitte, and several other Editor's Choice awards.

We've looked closely at PhonePower's service and features to give you detailed analysis of their offerings.

One of the best things PhonePower has going for it is its overall value. For residential VoIP providers, we determine value by looking at price vs. quality and features. Check out the features block to see why PhonePower scored high on value.

Unlimited Calling

PhonePower's home phone plans all come with unlimited calling. The 'unlimited calling' countries depend on the plan you select (USA/Canada, Unlimited World, World Plus, etc.

Summary: PhonePower Home Phone Service is great solution for switching from traditional landline service. Highly recommended.

PhonePower Reliability (9.0 / 10)

As with other residential VoIP services, PhonePower's reliability really depends on several factors, the Internet connection and network, the VoIP device, and the interfaces used to manage the service (e.g. apps, online account areas, etc). PhonePower's device is as reliable as most residential VoIP devices. Not too many problems there.

However, customers have complained a bit about the PhonePower mobile app and the online interface. Complaints include issues such as the app not being completely compatible with mobile OS updates, the online interface being outdated and kind of clunky, and overall system sluggishness.

Unfortunately, these issues compel us to degrade PhonePower's reliability rating.

On the upside, PhonePower offers Failsafe. This feature automatically forwards all calls to a designated number of your choice in situations of spotty or failed internet service, as well as during power outages.

Summary: We've given PhonePower a lower than average reliability rating due to app and user interface issues. We don't think these issues are deal breakers, but we think you should be aware of them.

PhonePower Features (9.4 / 10)

A Summary of PhonePower Features

Features are some of the most important factors to consider when switching to a new phone service. PhonePower scores well in the features department, as they include over 45 features with every plan.

They provide all of the traditional features that you'd expect in a calling service like Call Routing, 3-way Conferencing, Voicemail, and Caller ID. However, PhonePower residential service provides a ton more features like a Free Second Line, Voicemail-to-Email, Fax Catcher, Softphone, Web Based Call Logs, Simultaneous Ring, and more (see features list below).

Summary: We really like PhonePower's feature set. They're ahead of the game when it comes to features.

PhonePower Value (9.6 / 10)

Is PhonePower Home Phone a good value?

In the residential phone service category, PhonePower gets great marks in the value department.

For only $8.33/mo (1-year pre-pay) you can get unlimited calling in the US, Canada, and Puerto Rico. PhonePower adds 1 hour per month of International calling to 40+ countries. Plus, you get over 45 calling features as described in the features section of the review.

If you need a more robust International calling plan PhonePower has 3 great options. The cost ranges from $19.95 to $49.95 per month with no contract required. The plans include unlimited calling to 28, 75, or 87 countries, depending on the plan. The pricing on PhonePower's International plans is very competitive. Add 45+ features and PhonePower plans are a great value.

By the way, a side note...most companies reference 'additional taxes, fees or other charges' next to their pricing, with no specifics. PhonePower, on the other hand, lists the fees so you can see them before signing up for service. Kudos to PhonePower for being so transparent!

Summary: PhonePower Residential VoIP gets one of our top ratings for value.

PhonePower Customer Support (9.2 / 10)

As alluded to briefly in the review summary, PhonePower does okay in the customer support/service department.

While they have a lot of great online support in the PhonePower.com Knowledge Base in terms of 'how-to guides', troubleshooting, and FAQs, the website seems to be a bit outdated. In fact, the user Forums link doesn't work at all. Paging PhonePower: this needs to be fixed!

PhonePower prides themselves in having only US based customer support, a plus in our book. However, users have complained about inadequate customer service training and ineffective advice. Most providers have challenges meeting the needs of ever-growing customer bases, however, it looks like PhonePower is a little behind the curve in this area (based on support reviews).

We really like PhonePower's plans and features, but we're a little disappointed in the customer support department. Hopefully PhonePower will heed the advice of many reviewers and get their support department on the ball.

Summary: PhonePower does well with online support and guidance, but needs some work in the call support department.
