Vonage Residential Review Summary

Vonage has been a leading residential VoIP phone service provider since 2001. They've won numerous awards over the years and have continued to satisfy customers as the VoIP world has matured. We've looked closely at Vonage's home phone service features, reliability, and customer service. It's absolutely clear - Vonage Residential VoIP is one of our top rated providers.

First of all, let's talk about experience and innovation. Because Vonage has been in the VoIP world since the early 2000's, they've grown and matured hand-in-hand with the technology. Their home phone feature set is second to none (see features section below), and they continue to develop new and exciting ways to utilize your Internet connection for voice and mobile communications.

Second, Vonage is simple. Vonage has mastered the process of transitioning you from your landline service to VoIP. You simply plug the 'Vonage Box' into your router, connect your home phone to the Vonage Box, and you're ready to make calls!

Savings!

We think one of the biggest benefits of switching to Vonage Home Phone is the savings. Check out the plans (below) and see how Vonage compares to your current landline service and to other providers.

Award Winning Customer Support

Only a few providers get as high ratings as Vonage does in the customer support/service department. Vonage offers 24/7 support, plus they have great online resources (videos, chat, forums, etc). Again, Vonage's long experience benefits its customers greatly.

Bottom Line:

Vonage Residential VoIP is our top recommendation for home phone service. Vonage has great features (including mobile apps), their system is very stable, and they have great customer support.

Overall Review

We looked at Vonage Residential VoIP phone service in the following areas: reliability, features, value, and customer support. Overall Vonage scored well and we recommend the service to folks looking to save money and upgrade to more modern calling features.

While residential VoIP service is highly reliant on your Internet connection for reliable operation, a VoIP provider's hardware and management software play a key role. Here's where Vonage's years of experience kicks in. The Vonage Box is a very simple 'plug and play' device that has performed very well in various lab and real life durability tests. It just works! Add to that Vonage's account management area that allows you to configure your service to any level of detail you'd like.

Vonage Residential's list of included features in impressive. They stack up very well compared to all the providers. One of the best features is Vonage Extensions. Extensions allows you to make and receive calls on your smartphone. And, you get free Wi-Fi calling too.

When it comes to value, we've given Vonage Residential phone service our highest value rating. You really can't beat all the features and service you get with Vonage, compared to the other providers.

Finally, Vonage simply wins when it comes to customer support/service. They've won multiple awards over the years and seem to keep getting better.

Bottom line: Vonage Residential VoIP gets our top recommendation slot when it comes to Overall ratings.

Residential Review

How does Vonage Residential service compare to the other providers? We've awarded Vonage the top slot in our Residential VoIP phone service reviews.

Here are a few things we like about Vonage Phone Service. First, you can transfer your current phone number to Vonage (option available in most situations). And, as long as you remain a Vonage customer, you can keep your phone number for life, even if you move to a different location or area code. Win win!

Second, Vonage offers activation savings (e.g. no activation fee) if you who choose one of the promotion contract plans (usually 1 year agreement).

And third, all Vonage phone plans come with 25+ free features. If you're switching over from a traditional landline phone service, you'll really appreciate the benefits of a modern VoIP calling service. Some of the features you'll appreciate include Vonage Voicemail Plus (get audio files of messages sent via email), Simulring (forward calls to 5 additional phones), In-Network Calling (unlimted calls to other Vonage customers, anywhere), 3-Way Calling, and Vonage Extensions (call from your smartphone).

Bottom line: Vonage Residential phone service is our top pick for a reliable, feature packed landline phone replacement.

Vonage Residential Reliability (9.1 / 10)

So how does Vonage score in the reliability department? Short answer: very well. Residential VoIP service depends on your VoIP device (hardware) AND your Internet connection. Vonage's hardware device, the 'Vonage Box', performs very well and is highly rated by customers, Best Buy, Amazon.com, and other online retailers.

But what about Internet outages? Technically, Vonage service will not work without Internet service (a limitation of all VoIP service), however Vonage allows you to set up a Network Availability Number. During a an Internet outage, all calls get forwarded to the landline or cell number you have input as your Network Availability Number. Bottom line, you're not going to miss calls.

Vonage Residential Features (9.2 / 10)

A Summary of Vonage Residential Features

Compared to other providers Vonage Residential excels in the features category. In addition to the huge set of included features, Vonage offers some impressive add-on features.

Let's talk about what we really like in the included features list. First, Vonage Extensions. Over a million users have downloaded this app on android devices alone. The app allows you to make and receive calls over Wi-Fi or 3G/4G. Essentially, you can take your VoIP calling plan wherever you go.

Next, we really like the Selective Call Block feature. Sick of telemarketers and robocalls? This feature will save you. You can manage this feature via Vonage Extensions or your online account.

Your Vonage VoIP service also comes with a ton of other features including Vonage Voicemail Plus (audio files sent to your email), Ring Lists, Do Not Disturb, Call Block, 3-Way Calling, Call Hunt, and Bandwidth Saver. (See the full list of features below).

Vonage's add-on features are impressive too. Options include Toll Free Numbers, Dedicated Fax Line, Virtual Number, and more. With a Virtual Number you can select a number in one of 22 available countries that your family or friends live in, and then call without incurring international long distance rates. Way useful!

The last thing we want to mention is a feature we haven't seen in any other VoIP phone carrier. Vonage calls it Boomerang and it's part of their Extensions App. First you download the Vonage Extensions App and select the numbers you want to add to boomerang. Whenever these selected contacts call, Vonage answers and asks the person to hang up. Once they do, Vonage connects you both using YOUR Vonage number. The purpose is to allow them to call you without incurring any charges. It's just one more way your friends can call you for free.

Bottom line: Vonage Residential VoIP service comes with tons of great features, plus you can add other very useful features at reasonable rates. See all of Vonage's home phone service features below.

Vonage Residential Value (9.1 / 10)

Is Vonage Residential a good value?

We think Vonage Residential phone service is the best value in the home phone service category. They offer a very solid set of standard features across several different, very reasonable calling plans. Plan pricing ranges from $9.99 a month to $27.99 a month depending on what locations are included and your contract length.

Vonage offers introductory pricing if you select a one-year agreement. If you're not interested in a yearly contract, you do have the option of signing up for month to month service with all of their plans.

The US & Canada 400 plan is a real value. Whether you select a year contract or month to month service, you pay the same monthly fee of $12.99. Of course, all plans include additional taxes or fees, so we recommend you always read the fine print before signing up for service.

Bottom line: Vonage Residential VoIP service is a great value.

Vonage Residential Customer Support (9.0 / 10)

Vonage's customer support center is pretty impressive. In addition to their chat support available 24/7, their phone support available 9am-12am Monday - Friday, and 9am-8:30pm on Saturdays, they have an amazing online support site.

The Residential Support Center is separated into five basic categories: Billing & Payment, Technical Support, Plans & Services, Manage Account, and Features & Settings. Each section is full of very useful content. We get the impression that almost two decades of experience has placed Vonage in a unique position, capable of quickly and effectively addressing most problems or questions customers come up with.

We particularly like the way Vonage's FAQ page is designed. Topics are separated into five distinct categories. They include Service, Installation, Plan, Features, and Mobile. Very useful for getting to the help you need.

Our favorite section of the online customer support center is the Vonage Support Community. Get access to other users like you and take advantage of their experiences and insights with the Vonage products.

The vast majority of customers rate Vonage Residential customer support with high marks. You can find negative reviews, but with over 2.5 million subscribers, some hiccups are inevitable. What's telling is that with so many users, Vonage continues to win awards for customer service and support.

Bottom line: Vonage customer support is among the best for VoIP service providers.
